Want to step up your drug testing?

Category : News

UK businesses are turning more and more to workplace drug testing and when applied properly it will raise the standards of any workforce; let’s take a look at how we can step up your drug testing. In recent years there has been a steady increase in the use of illegal drugs; both inside and outside of the workplace.

A study carried out in 2012 by the United Kingdom Addiction Services Support Agency states that addiction and drug abuse cost the UK industry in excess of £800 million per year and up to £6.4 billion from alcohol misuse.

Testing for drugs and alcohol misuse can keep a business safe and legal with extra benefits:

– Reduced frequency of incidents
– Decreased safety concerns
– Increased productivity
– Reduced absenteeism and the negatives this raises
– Reduced recruitment and training costs
– Improvement of morale and employee relations

Before we proceed let us just recap what the law states:

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 – section 2 – place a duty on an employer to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare at work of their employees.

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 – places a duty on an employer to assess the risks to the health and safety of employees. This means an employer can be prosecuted if they knowingly allow an employee to continue working while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and their behavior places the employee themselves or others at risk.

Road Traffic Act 1988 – states that any person who, when driving or attempting to drive a motor vehicle on a road or other public place, is unfit to drive through drink or drugs shall be guilty of an offense.

Transport and Works Act 1992 – makes it a criminal offense for certain workers to be unfit through drugs and/or drink while working on railways, tramways, and other guided transport systems.

So how can you step up your drug testing?

In order to have the most robust level of screening within your business, you need to ensure several areas are covered. The first part of any drug testing process within a business is to establish your Drugs and Alcohol Policy.

Which to use for your screening

Increasingly UK employers choose saliva drug testing for their initial testing. (NOTE: Urine testing offers longer detection)
When considering saliva testing vs other drug testing methods, consider the following points:

– No urine collections (consider integrated urine cup tests as a solution)
– Observed collections without privacy issues
– Can be performed on-site anytime and anywhere with immediate results
– More-invasive (saliva testing normally involves swabs on sticks into the mouth)
– Saliva Eliminates need for same-gender sample collections/observation
– Saliva Testing integrity (difficult to adulterate as directly observed)
– Results available in 10 minutes (same as urine)
– No additional equipment (same as urine)
– Saliva tests detect drugs for much shorter windows after use

Confirmation Testing

In order to add a final layer of protection for our clients, we follow up all positive drug tests with a further laboratory-based confirmation test. During this time it is customary for the tested subject to be placed on suspension pending the results of the lab results.

By using a full chain of custody confirmation system, employers protect themselves from legal challenges following disciplinary proceedings.

Our labs are BSI accredited and use GS/MS analysis to ensure that the results are accurate beyond a reasonable doubt.
